Full Day Neah Bay Salmon Fishing Charter

When you're serious about salmon fishing, there's no substitute for a full day charter in the productive waters off Neah Bay. This isn't your typical half-day rush job – we're talking about a proper salmon hunt where you've got time to work the water, adjust to conditions, and focus on landing quality Chinook and Coho during their prime season from July through September. At $600 for two anglers with room to add up to four more at $300 per person, it's perfectly sized for couples or small groups who want to experience some of the Pacific Northwest's best salmon fishing without the crowds.

What to Expect on the Water

This charter is built around one simple idea: give anglers the time they need to do things right. We're not rushing back to the dock after four hours – you'll have a full day to cover water, read conditions, and put yourself where the fish are. Neah Bay sits at the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the offshore waters here are legendary among salmon fishermen for good reason. The convergence of currents, depth changes, and baitfish concentrations create perfect conditions for both Chinook and Coho throughout the summer months. Your captain knows these waters inside and out, from the underwater structure that holds fish to the seasonal patterns that dictate where salmon will be feeding on any given day. Plan to be on the water early and stay late – that's when the magic happens and you separate the tourists from the serious anglers.

Trolling & Deep Sea Techniques

Salmon fishing here is all about trolling and deep sea techniques that put your bait or lures right in the strike zone. We're not talking about casting from shore – this is offshore fishing where downriggers, flashers, and precise speed control make the difference between going home with stories and going home with dinner. The trolling spread typically includes a mix of spoons, hoochies, and cut plug herring, all rigged to run at different depths and distances behind the boat. Downriggers get your gear down to where the big Chinook are cruising, sometimes 60 to 100 feet deep, while the Coho might be working closer to the surface chasing baitfish. Your guide will handle the technical side – setting lines, adjusting speeds, and reading the fish finder – but you'll be hands-on when it comes to fighting and landing fish. Don't forget that Washington state fishing license – it's required and strictly enforced, so grab yours before you head to the dock.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Chinook salmon are the stars of the show here, and for good reason. These are the kings of the Pacific, with mature fish regularly hitting 20 to 30 pounds and the occasional monster pushing 40 pounds or more. Chinook are aggressive feeders during the summer months, gorging on herring, anchovies, and squid as they prepare for their spawning runs. What makes them so exciting to catch isn't just their size – it's their fight. A big Chinook will test your tackle, your technique, and your patience with powerful runs and stubborn deep fights that can last 15 to 20 minutes. The meat is incredible too, with that rich, buttery flavor that makes all the effort worthwhile. July through September is prime time as these fish are at their peak condition, fat and strong from months of ocean feeding.

Coho salmon bring a completely different energy to the day, and they're every bit as fun as their bigger cousins. These silver bullets typically run 8 to 15 pounds, but what they lack in size they make up for in pure athleticism. Coho are famous for their aerial displays – when one hits your line, get ready for jumps, runs, and acrobatics that'll get your heart racing. They're surface-oriented feeders during much of the summer, which means they often hit hard and fast when they find your lure. The fight is typically shorter but more intense than a Chinook, with multiple jumps and lightning-fast direction changes. Coho also make excellent table fare with firm, flavorful meat that's perfect for grilling or smoking. During peak season, it's not uncommon to encounter schools of feeding Coho, leading to fast action that'll keep everyone on the boat busy.

Time to Book Your Spot

Prime salmon season doesn't last forever, and the best fishing windows fill up fast with repeat customers who know what Neah Bay has to offer. This full day format gives you the best shot at success, whether you're after a trophy Chinook for the wall or a cooler full of Coho for the freezer. The pricing structure makes it work for couples looking for a quality day on the water or groups of friends ready to split the cost of a serious fishing adventure. Just remember that deposits are non-refundable, so check the weather window and make sure your group is committed before you book. With the right conditions and a full day to work, you'll understand why anglers keep coming back to these waters year after year.

Chinook Salmon

The mighty Chinook, or King Salmon, is what serious anglers come to Neah Bay for. These bruisers typically run 15-30 pounds out here, with occasional giants pushing 40+. They cruise the deeper offshore waters we target, usually 60-120 feet down, feeding on herring and anchovies. Kings have that distinctive silver body with black spots and fight like bulldogs - strong, steady pulls that'll test your gear. The meat is rich and oily, perfect for the grill or smoker. During our July-September season, they're actively feeding before their spawning run. One key tip: keep your bait moving naturally through the water column. Dead-stick a herring and you'll watch other boats hook up while you sit empty-handed. These fish can taste when something's off.

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Coho, or Silver Salmon, bring the acrobatics to our Neah Bay trips. Running 8-15 pounds typically, they're smaller than Kings but make up for it with pure athleticism - expect jumps, runs, and spirited fights that keep you on your toes. They cruise similar depths as Chinook but tend to be more aggressive feeders, often found in schools. The bright orange meat is fantastic eating. What makes Coho special is their willingness to hit lures and their spectacular aerial shows when hooked. They can jump 6 feet straight up, so keep that rod tip low and line tight. During peak season, we'll often find them mixed with baitfish in 80-100 feet of water. Pro tip: bright colors work best - chartreuse and pink spoons are deadly when these silvers are on the bite.
